AI Search Optimization for WordPress: How to Get Your Site Cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity

AI search optimization is quickly becoming as important as classic SEO. Last month a client asked us a question we are hearing more and more: “Our Google rankings look fine, so why are fewer people visiting the site?” When we dug into it, the answer was simple. Many of their potential visitors were asking ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity instead, getting a complete answer, and never clicking anything.
This shift is one of the biggest topics in the web and WordPress community right now, and it even had its own session at a recent WordPress event. The good news is that you are not powerless. AI assistants still need sources, and they tend to quote the same kind of content: clear, trustworthy, well structured pages. In this guide we explain how WordPress AI search works, which settings matter, and the practical AI search optimization steps we use to make content “quotable”.
What is AI search optimization?
AI search optimization is the work of making your content easy for AI tools to find, understand, trust and quote. You will also see it called GEO (generative engine optimization) or AEO (answer engine optimization). The names are new, but most of the work is good, honest SEO done carefully.
How AI search is different from classic search
Classic search gives you a list of ten links, and you choose one. AI search reads several pages for you, writes a single answer, and usually shows a few sources as small links or citations. Google’s own guidance on AI features says the same core SEO best practices still apply.
That changes the goal. Ranking in position one still matters, but now there is a second prize: being one of the sources the AI quotes. A cited source gets brand exposure even when nobody clicks, and the people who do click are often more ready to act, because the AI has already answered their basic questions.
AI search optimization in 6 steps
Step 1: Make sure AI tools are allowed to read your site
AI companies use different crawlers for different jobs. Some collect data to train models, some fetch pages for live search answers, and some only visit when a user asks the assistant to open a link. You can allow or block each one in your robots.txt file. OpenAI, for example, documents its crawlers and their purposes publicly.
| Company | Used for AI search answers | Used for model training |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI (ChatGPT) | OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User | GPTBot |
| Anthropic (Claude) | Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User | ClaudeBot |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User | Not separated in the same way |
| Googlebot (also powers AI Overviews) | Google-Extended controls use for Gemini models |
A common, balanced choice is to allow the search crawlers so your site can be cited, and decide separately whether you are comfortable with training crawlers. For example:
# Allow AI search and user-requested visits
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
# Opt out of model training (optional)
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
User-agent: Google-Extended
Disallow: /
Two warnings. First, blocking Googlebot to avoid AI Overviews would also remove you from normal Google search, so do not do that. Second, check your security plugin and CDN. Firewalls sometimes block unfamiliar bots by default, and that can silently stop AI search tools from reading your pages.
On WordPress, SEO plugins like Rank Math and Yoast let you edit robots.txt from the dashboard, so you do not need to touch server files.
Step 2: Write answers, not just articles
AI assistants look for passages that answer a question directly. The easiest AI search optimization win is to give them those passages.
- Put the answer first. If your heading is “How long does a website take to build?”, the very next sentence should answer it: “A small business website usually takes two to six weeks.” Then explain.
- Use real questions as headings. Write H2 and H3 headings the way people actually ask, which is also how they talk to AI assistants.
- Keep key facts in short, self-contained paragraphs. A paragraph that makes sense on its own is much easier for an AI to quote accurately.
- Use lists and tables for comparisons and steps. Structured information is easier to extract and summarise correctly.
- Add a short FAQ section at the end of important pages, covering the follow-up questions people ask.
Step 3: Show real experience
AI tools have read millions of generic articles. What they cannot find everywhere is first-hand experience: your own tests, your own numbers, your own mistakes and how you fixed them.
Compare these two sentences:
- “Caching plugins can improve website speed.”
- “After enabling page caching on a client’s WooCommerce store, the homepage load time dropped from 3.8 to 1.2 seconds on mobile.”
The second one is specific, believable and unique. That is the kind of sentence AI answers tend to quote, and the kind readers remember. Add author names, dates, screenshots and real examples wherever you can.
Step 4: Use structured data on your WordPress site
Structured data (schema markup) is a small block of code that tells machines exactly what a page is: an article, a product, a how-to guide, an organisation, a FAQ. It removes guesswork for search engines and AI systems alike, which makes it a core part of WordPress AI search optimization.
You do not need to write it by hand on WordPress. Rank Math, Yoast and similar plugins add Article, Organization and Breadcrumb schema automatically. Check these basics:
- Your organisation name, logo and contact details are filled in the SEO plugin settings.
- Every post has an author and a published or updated date.
- Product, service and FAQ pages use the matching schema type.
On our own free tools site, every tool page includes breadcrumb, web application and FAQ schema, so machines can understand what each tool does without guessing.
Step 5: Keep content fresh and consistent
AI answers often prefer recent, up to date information, especially for topics that change quickly like software, prices and regulations.
- Review your most important posts every few months and update facts, screenshots and examples.
- Show the “last updated” date on posts.
- Make sure your business details (name, address, phone, services) are identical across your website, Google Business Profile and social profiles. Conflicting information makes AI tools less confident about quoting you.
Step 6: Make your site fast and easy to read
AI crawlers, like Google, work best with pages that load quickly and show their main content in plain HTML. A few WordPress specific tips:
- Avoid hiding important text inside sliders, tabs that load later, or images of text.
- Use a caching plugin and compress images.
- Keep one clear H1 per page and a logical heading order.
- Fix broken links and redirect chains, since crawlers may give up on them.
What about llms.txt and Markdown feeds?
You may have seen llms.txt mentioned: a proposed file that lists your most important pages for AI tools, similar to a sitemap. It is cheap to add and does no harm, but it is still a proposal, not something the major AI search tools have officially committed to. Treat it as a bonus, not a strategy.
The WordPress AI team is also experimenting in this area. Their AI plugin recently added Markdown feeds aimed at AI systems, which is a sign of where WordPress AI search is heading. It is worth watching, but the fundamentals above matter far more for now.
Common AI search optimization mistakes
- Blocking every AI bot by default. If search crawlers cannot read your pages, you cannot be cited.
- Writing long introductions before the answer. AI tools and readers both skip to the point.
- Publishing thin, generic content. If your page says what a thousand other pages say, there is no reason to quote yours.
- Letting facts go out of date. Old prices or features make AI tools trust your page less.
- Chasing tricks. Hidden text or keyword stuffing aimed at AI can hurt your normal search rankings too.
How to check whether AI tools mention you
There is no perfect “AI rankings” report yet, but you can still measure your AI search optimization progress:
- Ask the assistants directly. Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, and note whether your site appears as a source.
- Watch referral traffic. In Google Analytics, look for visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and similar sources.
- Track branded searches. If people see your name in AI answers, more of them will later search for your brand directly.
AI search optimization checklist
- Allow AI search crawlers in robots.txt, and check your firewall is not blocking them.
- Answer the main question in the first sentence under each heading.
- Use question style headings, lists and tables.
- Add first-hand experience, real numbers and examples.
- Confirm your SEO plugin outputs Article and Organization schema.
- Show author names and updated dates, and refresh key posts regularly.
- Keep business details consistent everywhere.
- Test monthly by asking AI assistants your customers’ questions.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI search optimization different from SEO?
Mostly no. AI search optimization builds on normal SEO. The main extras are allowing AI crawlers, writing answer-first passages that are easy to quote, and showing clear first-hand experience.
Will blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT answers?
GPTBot is used for model training. ChatGPT’s search answers use OAI-SearchBot, so you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot if you want to be cited without contributing to training.
Do I need a special plugin for WordPress AI search?
No. A good SEO plugin like Rank Math or Yoast covers robots.txt, schema and meta data. The most important work is in your content, not in extra plugins.
How long does AI search optimization take to show results?
Usually a few weeks to a few months, similar to SEO. AI tools need to crawl your updated pages, and new or rewritten content takes time to be trusted and quoted.
Should I add llms.txt to my WordPress site?
It does no harm and takes a few minutes, but no major AI search tool has officially committed to using it yet. Focus on the six steps above first.
Final thoughts
AI search does not make websites less important. It makes good websites more important, because AI assistants need trustworthy sources to quote. The sites that win are the ones that answer clearly, prove their experience and keep their information accurate.
