Strength:

How to create a strong password

  1. Move the slider to choose a length. 16 is a good default.
  2. Keep all four character types ticked unless a website does not allow symbols.
  3. Click Copy next to the password you like, or Generate new passwords for fresh ones.
  4. Save it straight into your password manager before you leave the page.

What makes a password strong

Attackers do not guess passwords one by one by hand. They use software that tries billions of combinations, starting with leaked passwords, dictionary words and common patterns like "Summer2024!". A strong password avoids all of that. It is long, completely random and used on only one site.

PasswordWhy it is weak or strong
password123One of the most leaked passwords in the world
Fluffy2015!Pet name plus year plus symbol is a very common pattern
P@ssw0rdSwapping letters for symbols fools nobody

Good password habits

Need a password you can type easily on a TV or game console? Tick "Avoid look-alikes" and make it a bit longer to keep the strength up.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to use an online password generator?

This one is. The passwords are created by your own browser using its secure random number generator, and nothing is sent to our server or stored. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it keeps working.

How long should my password be?

At least 12 characters for everyday accounts and 16 or more for email, banking and password manager master passwords. Length matters more than anything else.

What does "bits of entropy" mean?

It measures how many guesses an attacker would need. Each extra bit doubles the work. Around 60 bits is solid for most accounts, and 80 bits or more is very strong.

How do I remember all these passwords?

You do not have to. Use a password manager such as Bitwarden, 1Password or the one built into your browser or phone. It remembers them for you and fills them in automatically.

What are look-alike characters?

Characters that are easy to confuse, like the number 0 and the letter O, or 1, l and I. Excluding them helps when you need to read or type a password by hand.
