US or UK? How to tell
If a recipe comes from an American website or cookbook, assume US measures. British recipes usually give metric amounts these days, but older ones might use imperial pints (568 ml) and fluid ounces. Fuel economy figures are another trap: miles per gallon in the UK uses the bigger imperial gallon, so UK mpg numbers look better than US ones for the same car.
Handy everyday volumes
- A standard can of soda holds 330 ml in Europe and 12 US fl oz (355 ml) in the US.
- A wine bottle is 750 ml, about 25.4 US fl oz.
- Health guides often suggest about 2 liters of water a day, which is roughly 8 US cups.
