How to convert temperature
- Type the temperature in the From box. Negative numbers work too.
- Choose the scale it is in and the scale you want.
- The converted temperature appears immediately, and the table shows all three scales together.
The formulas
- °C to °F: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32
- °F to °C: °C = (°F - 32) × 5/9
- °C to K: K = °C + 273.15
- K to °C: °C = K - 273.15
Temperatures worth remembering
| What | Celsius | Fahrenheit |
|---|---|---|
| Water freezes | 0 °C | 32 °F |
| Cool day | 10 °C | 50 °F |
| Room temperature | 20 to 22 °C | 68 to 72 °F |
| Hot summer day | 30 °C | 86 °F |
| Normal body temperature | 37 °C | 98.6 °F |
| Fever | 38 °C and above | 100.4 °F and above |
| Water boils (at sea level) | 100 °C | 212 °F |
Oven temperature chart
| Description | °C | °F | Gas mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | 150 | 300 | 2 |
| Moderate | 180 | 350 | 4 |
| Moderately hot | 200 | 400 | 6 |
| Hot | 220 | 425 | 7 |
| Very hot | 230 | 450 | 8 |
Recipes round oven temperatures, so 180 °C and 350 °F are treated as the same even though 350 °F is really 176.7 °C. If you have a fan oven, lower the temperature by about 20 °C.
Quick estimate in your head
To go from Celsius to Fahrenheit roughly, double the number and add 30. 15 °C becomes about 60 °F (the exact answer is 59). To go back, subtract 30 and halve it. It is close enough for deciding whether you need a jacket.
