Customs vary a lot around the world. In Japan tipping can even be seen as rude, while in the UK 10 to 12.5 percent is normal and is often added to the bill as a service charge. Check your receipt before adding a tip so you do not pay it twice.

Splitting a bill fairly

Dividing equally is quick and works well when everyone ordered roughly the same. If one person had a starter, a main and two cocktails while another had a salad, it can feel unfair. In that case, have each person enter their own items as the bill amount and use the same tip percent. Everyone pays for what they had, and the server still gets a consistent tip.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

It depends on the country. In the United States, 15 to 20 percent is standard at sit down restaurants, and 18 to 20 percent is common for good service. In much of Europe and Asia, service is often included or a small round up is enough.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Etiquette experts usually say before tax, since tax is not part of the service. Many people tip on the total anyway because it is easier. Enter whichever amount you prefer.

What does "Round up each share" do?

It rounds each person's share up to the next whole number, so nobody has to deal with coins. The small extra goes to the tip.

How do I quickly work out a 20% tip in my head?

Move the decimal point one place to the left to get 10%, then double it. On a bill of 46, 10% is 4.60, so 20% is 9.20.
