Examples
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| john smith | John Smith |
| MARY O'NEIL | Mary O'neil |
| new york city | New York City |
| red cotton t-shirt | Red Cotton T-Shirt |
Notice the second example. Names like O'Neil, McDonald or van der Berg have their own capital rules, and no tool can guess them all. A quick read after converting fixes those in seconds.
When to capitalize every word
- Names and addresses exported from a form where people typed in all caps or all small letters.
- Product titles in an online shop, where a consistent look makes listings easier to scan.
- Menus, buttons and navigation labels, if your design style uses capitals on each word.
- Spreadsheet columns such as city or company names before a mail merge.
Capitalize words in Excel or Google Sheets
Both have a built in formula: =PROPER(A1). It does the same thing as this tool, one cell at a time. For a quick one off job, copying the column here and back is often faster than adding a helper column.
