Why dots work well for keys
Dots read naturally as "inside". settings.email.sender tells you straight away that the sender belongs to the email part of the settings. Many tools take advantage of this. Laravel's config('mail.from.address'), i18next translation keys and Spring Boot properties all use dots to reach into nested values.
Good habits for naming keys
- Go from general to specific:
account.billing.title, nottitle.billing.account. - Keep each part short and lower case so keys are easy to search.
- Stay consistent across the whole project. Mixing
user.nameanduser_emailmakes keys harder to find later.
Need a different separator? Try snake_case, kebab-case or path/case.
