Find and Replace Text

Swap every copy of a word or phrase in one go. Handy when you are working outside a word processor or need regex power.

How to find and replace

  1. Paste your text into the top box.
  2. Type the word you want to change in Find, and the new word in Replace with.
  3. Tick any options you need. The result updates as you type and tells you how many replacements were made.
  4. Copy the result.

Handy regex patterns

Tick Use regex to use these. Copy the pattern into Find and the replacement into Replace with.

What it doesFindReplace with
Remove all numbers\d+(empty)
Put each word on its own line\s+\n
Add a bullet to every line^•
Remove HTML tags<[^>]+>(empty)
Swap "Last, First" to "First Last"(\w+), (\w+)$2 $1
Remove empty lines^\s*\n(empty)

In regex mode, ^ and $ match the start and end of every line, so patterns like the bullet example work on the whole list at once.

Frequently asked questions

What does "Whole words only" mean?

It stops the tool from changing parts of longer words. With it ticked, replacing "cat" will not touch "category" or "concatenate".

What is regex?

Regex, short for regular expression, is a mini language for describing patterns. For example \d+ matches any number and ^ matches the start of a line. It lets you do things a normal search cannot, like removing every number from a text.

Can I replace text with a new line?

Yes. Tick "Use regex" and type \n in the Replace with box. You can also use \t for a tab.

Can I delete words instead of replacing them?

Yes. Leave the Replace with box empty and every match is removed.
