Sort Lines Alphabetically

Put any list in order. Sort A to Z, by number, by length, flip it, or shuffle it into a random order.

How to sort a list

  1. Paste your list into the top box, one item per line.
  2. Choose how you want it sorted from the Sort by menu.
  3. Copy the sorted list from the result box.

Ideas for using it

Teachers shuffle student names to choose who presents first. Event planners alphabetize guest lists for the door. Developers sort import statements, config keys or CSS properties to keep files tidy. Shoppers sort a grocery list so the same kinds of items end up together. If you want to remove repeated entries too, run your list through the duplicate line remover first.

Frequently asked questions

Does it sort numbers correctly?

Yes. The alphabetical sort is "natural", so "Item 2" comes before "Item 10". Plain text sorting would put "10" first because 1 comes before 2.

How does the number sort work?

It looks for the first number in each line and sorts by that, so prices, scores or ranked lists sort properly even if they have words around them. Lines without a number go to the end.

Is the shuffle truly random?

It uses your browser's secure random number generator with the Fisher Yates method, which gives every possible order an equal chance. Click "Shuffle again" for a new order.

Does it handle accented letters?

Yes. Sorting follows the rules of your browser's language, so names like Émile and Zoë land in the right place instead of at the end of the list.
