How much text do I need?
A heading or button label: 2 to 6 words.
A product card or testimonial: 1 to 3 sentences.
A blog post mockup: 4 to 6 paragraphs.
A full page print layout: about 8 to 10 paragraphs.
When not to use placeholder text
Lorem ipsum is great early in a project, but swap it for real content as soon as you can. Real headlines are often much longer or shorter than the dummy text, and a design that looked perfect with neat Latin can break with actual product names. Never publish a live page with lorem ipsum on it. Search engines see it as low quality content, and visitors notice it straight away.
Frequently asked questions
What does lorem ipsum mean?
It does not mean anything on purpose. It comes from a scrambled passage of "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum", a book by the Roman writer Cicero from 45 BC. Words were cut, changed and mixed so the text looks like real language without being readable.
Why do designers use lorem ipsum?
Real looking text helps people judge a layout. If you use readable placeholder text, reviewers start commenting on the words instead of the design. Lorem ipsum has a natural mix of short and long words, so it fills space like real content.
Is the text different each time?
Yes. Apart from the optional classic opening, the words and sentences are randomly mixed every time you click Generate.
Can I get it with HTML tags?
Yes. Tick "Wrap in
tags" and each paragraph comes wrapped in paragraph tags, ready to paste into HTML.
